It was painted in January 2006 on a cold winter day, hence the cottonwood trees have no leaves, but the surrounding Oak trees keep their leaves all year. I was very intrigued with the dramatic cool blue & purple shadows of the gnarled roots on these magnificent trees. they looked to me as if they could get up and walk away!
